  2. It must have been quite hard to put up with that heat in open landscape and with all those bugs and warm water to drink. However it seemed that the late evening and night brought some compensation of observing the cosmos in cool breeze. I was curious about the trench around your 'char-pai' (khatalo). Was a trench of that size sufficient to deter scorpions and snakes to scale the side walls? Or did you have to fill it with precious water?

Fourteen or so years ago I had made my way to Dholavira via Sankhiali and Rapper. I had to hire a jeep to go though the Rann and along a bumpy causeway - water had filled the desert ankle deep and it looked like an immense sea. I had to take with me water and food. The food was nothing more than a bundle of mixed bhajiya I had to buy in Rapper. On the way we had to stop at several military check points. My driver had warned me not say anything - if found out that I was from UK a permit would be demanded. When asked I spoke in Charotari Gujarati and implied I was from Vadodara. It worked and we were flagged on. Halfway, we were stopped by a platoon of soldiers bearing guns. I was worried. My driver spoke to them. He said to me 'Sir, they were given lift by a lorry but had dropped them off at a wrong place and they are asking us for a lift'. I said as we had a big jeep there was no problem. Seven soldiers from the Indian Army and their Captain joined me. I engaged them in conversation. They were from all parts of India - UP, Rajastan, Tamilnadu etc. When told that I was going to Dholavira their captain produced a press clipping. I was surprised that it was about Dholavira. Later they all asked me if I minded if they came with me to Dholavira. I said to them that I would be delighted to have them with me. So Narendrabhai, I went over the whole Dholavira site in the company of these marvellous Indian soldiers who were keen on our ancient history besides defending the nation against enemy - the Pakistan border was only a few miles away.

  4. @ Jayantbhai,
Thank you very much for the wonderful narration of your experience of the Rann. First of all, may I reproduce your mail as a comment to the blog? I believe that it will be an inspiration to all Gujaratis who have been living in the West to visit Dhola Vira and look at our heritage.

As for the 'Snake Trench', I will need to explain the terrain a bit. The Rann is a unique creation of nature. You have seen two of the most fabulous phenomena. Kutch was an island with Kori Creek in the North and Gulf of Kutch in the South and East. There were islands in the earstwhile creek and eastern parts of the Gulf. When the sea receded, they became saltflats and those saline wetlands you saw. It is the islands where we have set up our outposts. These are still called "Bet", for instance, Nada Bet, Boria Bet in Banaskantha and Biar Bet, Bedia Bet North of Khavda, and Pung Bet etc. in the Gulf area north of Dasada. These are about 10-15 feet higher than the salt flats, where we have our posts.

These Bets are sandy, some with vegetation. Snake Trenches are only partially effective, because the sand often caves in or the light breeze shifts sand in the trench. Khatlo is the best option, and torches are useful. Besides, we have sentries patrolling during the night and their foot-falls sometimes prevent snakes from entering the perimeter.

I am attaching a photo of one of patrols in the Rann - which you will reminiscent of your visit to Dhola Vira.
